Südost Paket

In her artistic practice, Mila Panić combines personal and collective narratives of migration with strategies of mobility, memory and resistance. For the installation Südost Paket, she utilizes several bus tires and fills them with everyday objects such as cigarettes, perfume or chocolate. These prestigious objects often travel in the luggage of migrants. The relationship between physical space and cultural narrative is reflected in this process; the tires become capsules for smuggling ideas, representations, memories and even goods.  

Situated within Stuttgart’s municipal Lapidarium, a sculpture garden filled with remnants from five centuries of the city's history, this contemporary sculpture collides with witnesses of the city’s past. Amidst historical artifacts, Südost Paket oscillates between official historiography and individual memory, between museum collection and migrant transfer. Thus, the work poses the question of who collects, what is preserved and whose stories remain visible.
