Selma Selman was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina and lives and works in New York, Amsterdam, and Bihać. She consciously refers to herself as an artist of Romani origin emphasizing her agency in defining her identity. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in personal and familial narratives, as well as collective identity.. In her work, which revolves around desire and self-determination, her work investigates the boundaries of identity, value creation, law, and representation.Her works have been shown internationally, including at Gropius Bau, Berlin (2023), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2023), documenta fifteen in Kassel (2022), Manifesta 14 in Pristina (2022), Kunstraum Innsbruck (2022), MO Museum in Vilnius (2022), the FutuRoma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2019. In 2017, With “Get the Heck to School” (since 2017), she also founded a project to enable particularly young Roma girls to receive an education.
