The performance Mercedes Matrix (2019) by artist Selma Selman can be seen as a screening on several days at Österreichischer Platz in Stuttgart — a central traffic junction characterized by a striking traffic roundabout, which has become symbolic of both the challenges and potentials of urban mobility and urban development. In Mercedes Matrix , Selman and her family dismantle a Mercedes-Benz, effectively deconstructing the car as a status symbol. Whereas the recycling of scrap metal presents a sustainable alternative, for many families in the Roma community it is a survival strategy for securing their income. In Selma Selman's work, art becomes a tool that redefines the meaning of this practice and her family's work becomes a powerful narrative about value, survival and transformation.
