Ruins of Refueling

Performance

In her performative work ruins of refueling, Julia Hainz uses the gas station symbolically and autobiographically charged vantage point. Inspired by the experiences of her father, who worked on an oil refinery for several decades, who would frequent a nearby gas station, the local hang-out place, after his night shifts. Hainz interweaves personal memories with collective experiences of energy, exhaustion and care.

Using somatic exercises, the artist departs an autofictional journey that oscillates between solitude and assembly, acceleration and corrosion, endurance and decay. The bodies thus become resonating spaces for questioning energy supply and consumption — beyond an economic logic and the demands of normative productivity.

Based at Österreichischer Platz — a bustling traffic junction, a hydra of tunnels, ramps and elevated highways, but also a public square and an example of urban reuse — ruins of refueling creates a moment of pause and reflection.
